The Significance of Pentecost (sermon)

Acts 2 records the day the church came to life in Jerusalem. Ten days after the Lord ascended to heaven, the place where the disciples were gathered was shaken by a mighty move of the Holy Spirit that filled and empowered everyone of them. That day was the day of Pentecost. Pentecost was the fiftieth day of the Feast of Weeks. It was of the three feasts appointed by God in which all the Jews would come and celebrate to the Lord. (see Exodus 23.14-17)

The church’s founding on the day of Pentecost was no coincidence. It was ordained to happen on that day. But why this day? Let me give you a few insights here.

A celebration of a bountiful harvest. Pentecost simply means “fiftieth”. It was the fifteth day of the Feast of Weeks or Harvest, a celebration of God’s blessing of a bountiful harvest, which began the day the first fruits were harvested and presented before the LORD as a wave offering.

But while the Jews were celebrating the end of a harvest season, the church is just beginning its harvest of souls, which will last to the time of Christ return. It is a harvest that Christ has foretold in John 4.35-38.

A celebration of new life. Pentecost falls on the same day the first fruits were reaped from the field, which is the day after the Sabbath. The day the church was birthed into this world by the Holy Spirit, was the same day the Lord Jesus Christ, the Head of the Church, was raised from the dead. (See Leviticus 23.15; Matthew 28.1) The church was raised by the same power that raised Christ from the dead! (Romans 8.11)

Now, the Pentecost of the church was a one time event. But every man and woman who comes to Christ can and should have a personal pentecost experience because that is the beginning of new life in Christ. The coming of the Holy Spirit to a believer’s life is the new birth experience, which Paul calls adoption. (See Romans 8.15; Galatians 4.4-6)

I believe that the true Church is one that was born on the Day of Pentecost, and every one who is part of this Church will be born of the same Spirit. (1 Corinthians 12.13) God, by His grace, appointed a time of restorationi in the last days before the Lord’s return. That is why there was the restoration of the gifts at the turn of the 20th century. But the true church was not the one that formed into the pentecostal denomination, but that which continued to the message of the seventh messenger.

God bless.
