“Is the LORD Among Us, or Not?”: The Book of Exodus, Part 6

Many Christians have a hard time believing the abiding presence of God. It is not that they don’t believe His promise, but somehow they need tangible proofs that God is performing just as He said He would do.

The same is true of the people of Israel on the first leg of their journey out of Egypt. Barely three months after the exodus, in which God performed great and wondrous things on their behalf, they were already questioning whether the LORD was among them or not. And that was not the worst part. They questioned God’s presence based on their food and water supply! (See Exodus 15.22-27; Exodus 15.1-8; Exodus 17.1-7)

In this sermon we will see how God confirmed and demonstrated His presence in the midst of Israel. From the start of the journey He was already there to lead them through the wilderness and provide for all their needs. He gave them (1) the staff, (2) the pillar of cloud and fire, (3) manna, and (4) the rock. It is interesting to note that all four were present throughout the 40 years of their journey, even after the people had angered God multiple times.

Similarly, God keeps His promise to His people in this age. He faithfully abides in us, leads us, provide for our needs, and protects us from all harm – even in times when we question His presence! – because He wants us to make it through, finish this journey, and reach the land of milk and honey!
