The plagues that God poured out upon Egypt were not random curses conceived at a moment’s notice. They were intended to demonstrate the power of the God of Israel over all the gods of Egypt. Each plague was an attack against one or more Egyptian deities using the nature to which they were associated.
God said to Moses:
‘For I will go through the land of Egypt on that night, and fatally strike all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, from the human firstborn to animals; and against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgments—I am the Lord.
