There is a saying that goes, “not all that glitters is gold.” The same should be discerned when it comes to the idea of love: God is love, but not all love comes from God. Much of what the world calls “love” today has nothing to do with God at all. And God has nothing to do with them. These distorted ideas of love are products of human lust, pride, and selfishness. There is no sense of shame in them. They are not governed by God’s righteousness and holiness.
Read – 1 John 2.15-17
15 Do not love the world nor the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life, is not from the Father, but is from the world.
17 The world is passing away and also its lusts; but the one who does the will of God continues to live forever.
Beware that your heartbeats do not rhyme with the world nor the things in the world. Distorted love does not sync well with God’s love, neither can they beat together in one heart. And because they have different origins, those who follow after either of them will end up in different places: one will pass away with the world and its lusts, and the other will abide with God forever.
Let your affections be guided by God’s words. Be instructed from the Book that originated from the heart of God and beats with God’s mercy and grace for the lost.
God’s love compels us to love the sinner but the sin. God’s love teaches us to fear him and stay away from evil.
